Y'know, I'm really not sure that's true at all. Most of the bands from Goth
past which are no longer around are no longer around because they grew up
and settled down or moved on, as bands (and goths) tend to do. It's probably
true that a lot of them couldn't make a living from their music, but is that
actually because of file-sharing? I doubt it. After all, the sort of
file-sharing we're talking about has really only been around for, what, five
years? Bands have been failing to make a living from their music for years,
decades, probably centuries before that.
People do express very strong opinions about file-sharing destroying the
music scene, but they did that with cassette tapes too (remember "C30 C60
C90"?), and with video recorders, and neither of those did any harm. And it
does seem to be the case that when you look at the actual statistics, they
suggest that file-sharing _doesn't_ harm record sales, and may even boost
them.

Personally, I think the reason there are few big goth bands is because Goth
music is currently unfashionable. Once upon a time, the Sisters and the Cure
and the Mission appeared on Top of the Pops. Nowadays, goth bands don't get
a look-in in the mainstream, and therefore they don't get "big", because the
goth scene itself is limited in size.
