Best advice is buy GOOD batteries and always keep them charged up as much as

Your link's broken, threw up a 404.

Hmm, I'm new to this, recently had to buy a dismantlable scooter to go in
the car. I don't do long journeys, perhaps no more than a mile or two
around town centres, and I've been charging the batteries every three or
four times of use.

That memory effect thing was:

a) mostly a myth caused by nasa doing an article on a specific setup on board a satelite a long time ago where the charge and discharge levels were absolutely identical time after time. It was almost impossible to reproduce. And its stuck. Everyone "knows" that batteries have memories now... But they really dont and never did.

b) it only ever applied to nicads. Not lead acid or any other...

The thing that all lead acid batteries hate most is being discharged.
The deeper you discharge them the more damage you do. The longer they stay discharged the greater the level of sulphation occurs.
You should charge at least once a week over night even if you dont use it. You should charge overnight EVERY time you use it. You should also plug it in and charge it every time you get the opertunity during the day if thats possible too. But still always do a full overnight charge cycle as well.

I'd always been under the impression that it's better to discharge and then
recharge the batteries to avoid memory effect, rather than keep charging
after every use. Are you saying that's not the case?

Definitely the fastest way to kill your lead acid batteries!

It pays to buy things you dislike. They last much longer.

Oops.

Missed .htm off the end.

That should work...
