No Tim, because I was talking about when someone actually causes
their own illness.
Say I drink 6 or 7 pints of beer a day. Then after few years I have
kidney, liver problems. If my drinking was the cause of my illness,
would it be fair for the state to pay for my care.
Derek
If drinking was the cause of your illness and alcoholism ran in your
family ie there was a genetic factor to it then it would be as fair
for the state to pay for care as it would be to pay for the breast
cancer treatment of a woman with a family history of breast cancer(to
use but one example).
If you are not an alcoholic but just like to drink then yes you should
still be eligible for care if you get kidney or liver problems.
Once you take the dubious moral stance of denying people care for
less than satisfactory or what are perceived to be less than
satisfactory lifestyles then one is heading down a dangerous
road.
In such a climate it would be all too easy to justify denying
treatment to an increasing number of people as the goalposts
as to who is or isn't deemed worthy get moved.
Yes, indeed Tim: Such life-or-death decisions are not the remit of High
Court judges dealing with convicted murderers these days, so why should
medical consultants hold the proverbial 'axe'? Sounds more like the
Hippocratic 'bean counters' are not so much 'sainted' as 'god-like'! :-(
Cheers,
Pete.
