Does anybody here understand the 'Best Match' sort sequence?

If I select a category, for example Jewellery & Watches, then a sub
category, Wristwatches, I can select what sequence the results are shown in.

In the past I think the default was 'Time: Ending soonest'. But now it seems
to default to 'Best Match'. This is obviously so that sellers can be
punished for various reasons.

However, when I do this using different browsers, I get completely different
results. I've tried Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape and Safari. The
results are nothing like each other, which leads me to believe that a seller
has no control over where his/her listing appears in search results. A
listing may only have a few hours left, but it can appear several pages from
the top of the list. Thereby attracting fewer bids.

I tried this on a number of categories, so its not peculiar to the example
category given above.

Have I missed something?

Items that will generate the most profit for ebay will be placed at
the top. Things that will go in your favour are: free postage, power
seller status with good star ratings, high item cost, lots of existing
bids, requiring Paypal payment at time of purchase.

Things that will count against you include postal cost being higher
than item cost or having a low star score for postal charges,
collection only items, items with cheque and postal order payment
options.

You missed the point.

The sequence is different depending on which browser is used.

i.e. Somebody using Internet Explorer sees different results from somebody using Firefox.
