Set item yesterday via Special Delivery yesteday
Today I got mail from buyer at 4.30PM to this tone;
"This item did not arrive today and Royal Mail tells me that it is
delayed. There for, you are able to claim a refund on the postage.
Could you please refund me this postage amount as £10.99 is a hefty
charge for something that has not shown up on time?"
Ended up phoning royal mail to be informed that I have to wait till
item is delivered then decide to fill claim form with little mention
of provisions that in certain circumstances they can refuse to pay.
Now since I am trade, I decided to refund half of customers shipping
costs out of my pocket as a good will gesture (does not effect me at
all as item is sold on behalf of my client on commission bases). I
hate to see some small priced item sellers doing it and loosing their
profit.
Any thoughts without trying to flame me ;-))
extra for Special Delivery - so having to deal with delayed next day
delvery refunds is not going to happen often, for them.
For any trader that is concerned, they can make their position clear in
their t&c. Even for them though, it should be a rare event.
It is hardly extortion for a buyer who has paid extra for next day
delivery to request that the extra is refunded - should the item not be
delivered next day. Offering next day service is a selling tool that
should produce extra revenue that more than covers any refunds needed.
If it doesn't - then those sales are simply not worth making. Better not
to offer a service, if doing so decreases profit rather than increases it.

Hi Sue,
Thanks for unbiased input as always.
I never offered next day guaranteed delivery service, but simple
Special delivery to cover the cost of item for insurance purposes.
Then that is what you should have in your t&c and that would have provided the answer to any request for a refund for a delayed delivery.
Any
way once item is handed to courier, it is out of my hands, so I can
not warranty any deliveries at all. I understand and I repeat
understand after talking to Royal mail that sender is allowed to claim
back shipping costs if Special delivery is not delivered on next day
( with some provisions). £10.99 including shipping and packaging
material is not hefty charge, which costs £7.99 + packaging + VAT in
first place (buyer knew about costs in advance).
Again, you have to ensure that it is made clear in your t&c.
All I can extract
from it is; the buyer knows the new rules and going to abuse them to
his advantage (fair or not fair).
I suspect that you are right - but at least this particular one is avoidable by making the situation clear in your t&c.
In my auctions it says, "items will be shipped within 2 days of
payment", but I try shipping goods on someday payment arrives. Well I
have to use that extra day cushion to my advantage by not mailing
buyer for extra day after the item is shipped? May be I am wrong here,
but will wait for some replies.
When you mail makes no difference - if the buyer spots that you are entitled to a refund, he will try to claim that back.
You could reword your t&c, along the lines of, "Goods are shipped within 2 days of payment and an email will be sent at that time, advising you of the scheduled arrival date. Due to reasons beyond my control, in exceptional circumstances delivery may be delayed by an additional day or two from the date advised. Unfortunately no refunds of carriage costs can be made solely because of that delay."
