Got my first taste of it today.
Set item yesterday via Special Delivery yesteday
Today I got mail from buyer at 4.30PM to this tone;

“This item did not arrive today and Royal Mail tells me that it is
delayed. There for, you are able to claim a refund on the postage.
Could you please refund me this postage amount as £10.99 is a hefty
charge for something that has not shown up on time?”

Ended up phoning royal mail to be informed that I have to wait till
item is delivered then decide to fill claim form with little mention
of provisions that in certain circumstances they can refuse to pay.

Now since I am trade, I decided to refund half of customers shipping
costs out of my pocket as a good will gesture (does not effect me at
all as item is sold on behalf of my client on commission bases). I
hate to see some small priced item sellers doing it and loosing their
profit.
Any thoughts without trying to flame me ;-))

I doubt that many buyers of small priced items would be willing to pay extra for Special Delivery - so having to deal with delayed next day delvery refunds is not going to happen often, for them.

For any trader that is concerned, they can make their position clear in their t&c. Even for them though, it should be a rare event.

It is hardly extortion for a buyer who has paid extra for next day delivery to request that the extra is refunded - should the item not be delivered next day. Offering next day service is a selling tool that should produce extra revenue that more than covers any refunds needed. If it doesn't - then those sales are simply not worth making. Better not to offer a service, if doing so decreases profit rather than increases it.
