Hi,
I've just bought some goods from an ebay seller that aren't quite what
they say they are. I'm sure I'm not the first, but it's a first for me. I
have a strong feeling the goods are counterfeit (we're talking laptop
power supply) - the case moulding is different slightly from my original
and my laptop thinks it's a less powerful supply and won't run at full
speed from it. I think the 'factory' has slapped the wrong labels onto
the unit. I can't imagine Dell doing this.
Anyone followed this up with trading standards? I could just get a
refund, but I hate to think of others buying someting that isn't right,
particularly when it's plugged into the mains.
It's probably OK, I think you've just bought the incorrect power supply
for your laptop. If I am correctly assuming it is a Latitude C (or some
Inspiron) series PSU, there are quite a few variations of this type of PSU
with slightly different external mouldings on the connectors depending on
how old they are. Also some have different power output ratings as they
are designed for different laptop models.
Yes, it's the right supply - the label is correct. I have an inspiron 8200,
the dodgy supply says PA-9 6G356, which is as I would expect. I've bought
probably five of these supplies over the years - only one has failed in
generating power, all the others have had cable failure where the cable
enters the laptop plug.
All of the previous units are identical in case moudling. This would be
identical, except that the base pads are in a different place to every other
replacement unit I've bought. I wouldn't be phased, but I can't imagine that
Dell would supply a unit that is underpowered.

For instance the PA-6 version (most common) will power a
C840/Precision/Inspiron 8xxx but you'll get a message on startup saying
that it's not putting enough juice into the laptop. This sounds like what
you are experiencing. You need a PA-10 (I think) which is more or less
identical but has a higher power output (some also have a grey power
connector moulding). If you look on the underside of the laptop it will
display the required voltage and Amperage needed.
