I just got my latest statement from Mint. It came with a 'Notice of Variation to
your Card Agreement'. In it, they have changed their definitions of an
'advance', a 'cash substitute', and 'electronic money transfer'.
Mint is part of the Natwest/RBS group. Hardly surprising they're
following Natwest's lead.
In future 'advances' will now include:
purchases of vouchers, giftcards and other 'stored-value' cards.
electronic money transfers such as money orders or transfers to e-money accounts.
Seems to be very clear what is included.
I also lodged an official complaint that it should be made clear in the T&Cs
that this applies to PayPal and similar transactions specifically.
Why?
Mint's terms & conditions make it clear e-money transfers are
chargeable.
Paypal's terms & conditions make it clear payments through them are e-
money transfers
The only people who won't understand what this means are the ones who
probably aren't in a position to accept the terms & conditions of either
the credit card of the e-money institution in the first place.
I imagine
this may have an effect on people using PayPal in 2-3 months time when they spot
the new interest charges appearing on their statements as they wont have read
the leaflet before hand.
Serves them right, then (though, lets be honest, if you care so little
about your credit card you don't read important information they send
you, you probably won't notice an extra month's interest charges on a
few pieces of crap off ebay)
If you don't like the terms & conditions of your credit card, find a new
one, making sure to tell your current issuer *why* you're changing.
There are plenty other banks out there that want your business. You
could even get paypal's own credit card.
