Hi,I have in the past had bank charges refunded as they were unreasonable high, see this site
On 24th July PayPal made a duplicate direct debit from my bank account
by mistake. This is an account that I only use for online activitities
so is 90% used for PayPal - I also pay my ISP/Phone bills through it.
Because it is not my main account I run it very lean with only the
funds it needs. PayPal did not even inform me of their mistake until
the 6th August by email. I didn't see that email until the 9th as the
email went in to spam (no doubt owing to all the Phishing PayPal
mails.) I paid the missing £12 into the account in cash on the 10th
and the PayPal refund (less fees!!) arrived on the 12th.
Unfortunately, on the 8th two direct debits came in ( including an
unrelated one from PayPal) that caused my account to become overdrawn
by £9.97 ( nine pounds ninety seven pence.)
This morning (14/8) I phoned my bank (The Abbey) and asked them if they
were going to raise any charges because of this PayPal error. It turns
out YES - £80 - £30 pounds per debit plus £20 for being overdrawn
for two days. I asked them when they were going to tell me - their
answer the 26th August (nearly two weeks in the future.) During the
most incredibly Kafkaesque conversation I asked if they could send me a
letter detailing the charges now - yes they could but it wouldn't be
any quicker!!!!!
I phoned PayPal who said they MIGHT pay the Bank charges when I give
them evidence (screen print of Satement) which I cannot do until the
26th.
So there is nothing can do until the 26th. I can only hope that PayPal
will do the decent thing. Has anybody here had experience of this kind
of thing with PayPal and what were the outcomes?
I am not mad with PayPal (so far) because they only made a mistake but
I am hopping mad with Abbey - firstly for fining me £80 for a £9.97
transgression and secondly (worse) not even planning to tell me about
it for two weeks (and almost certainly creating a second overdraft and
nice fat fees for them.) Anybody know any official bodies that would be
interested in this kind of Banking malpractice.
I would be most grateful for all advice received.
