Why? What is the benefit?

Because it allows you to have multiple partitions on one physical disk.
In MS Windows, these partitions appear as separate drive letters (C: D:
E: etc). If you put MS Windows on C: and keep your data files on D:,
then when MS Windows goes very broken, you can do a format c: and
completely wipe the "disk" - but all your data is still safe on d:.

All this 'partitioning' stuff seems OK- but I found it easier to get a
300gig external H/D (that I can take to the other PC or the lappie)
and save stuff there.

I've always found the best course of action is to leave the beast
alone and not faff it about.

I work on the Formula 1 idea that there's mechanics and there's
drivers.

Mechanics can make the beast whizz, but don't necessarily have the
skill to get behind the wheel and win on the track. (Like programmers
- they make things happen but with no idea what the user may need or
want.)

Drivers don't necessarily have the skill to wield spanner but can get
ace performances and results on the track. (Like users - who can
describe in great detail what they think they want but have no idea of
the technicalities or if it's a good idea or is already there.)

I'm a driver - I've left the mechanic days behind. So long as it works
and I know where and how to fuel it and do the basic road tests then
I'll go miles with trouble free push the button turn it on magic
things happen 'puter motoring.
