Well if it's not drivers or a virus problem. I would think apart from the
possibility the printer is faulty, which obviously can't be ruled out. There
are a number of other possibilities, e.g. type of Software you are using to
print from and it's settings, low system resources, faulty or corrupt
fonts or font drivers, corrupted user files.
I would assume if you are printing labels you would be using some sort of
database program, such as Access or Excel or maybe some kind of OLE mail
merge combination along with a word processor. If you are printing lines it
suggests you are printing empty records. Which could mean that somewhere
along the line your data is not getting sent to the printer.
There could be a variety of reasons for this, insufficient system resources,
is usually a major cause. Also corrupted files can cause printing problems.
One way to un-corrupt a file and at the same time compact it, is to use
"save as" close your program and open the new file, this tends to get rid of
all the clinker that can build up when files are edited and appended over a
long period. Files also get fragmented, so using "save as" and creating a
new contiguous file can help.
The only other thing I can think of that might be causing the problem is
fonts. Font files do sometimes get corrupted. Also if your system is low on
resources, font drivers can stop working sometimes. I used to get that
occasionally with Win98 where either Windows TrueType fonts would crash out
or I would lose my Adobe fonts. This doesn't seem such a problem in Win 2000
and I assume also XP because of much better resource management, but I dare
say it could be a problem with some software and some printer drivers, or if
font files have got corrupted.
But at a guess I would think the most likely cause of your problems is
either the database software configuration you are using or a corrupt
database file.
What I usually do to test that is print to a PostScript printer driver to
file and convert the file to an Adobe Acrobat file, (one can also do this
directly with a suitable Adobe PDF driver). Of course if the Acrobat file
looks OK it might be easier to print from that instead :)
