Yes, that's an example of what I've seen. I couldn't remember where I had

since there is data there I don't have time to index properly myself, so

Lots of web sites that have open-source software allow it, so you can
find any version of a file you want.
I was hoping to be able to do this on my "ISP provided" webspace so that I
could just bung some jpegs on there, tell family and friends, and let them
investigate. Guess I won't be able to because I don't administer the
server.
You might be able to configure it via a .htaccess file, assuming they support them. Those are used to override the server configuration, but the server has got to be configured to allow you to override it, so it is not automatic that you will be able to do it.
Another option if you run cygwin is to run a simple UNIX script to created an index.html that has a link to every file.
Yet another is lists the files
c:> dir > somefile.txt
then an index.html that has a link to somefile.txt. At least people can get the names then. They wont be able to click a link, but they will know the names.
