You can get PHP scripts that emulate a shell connection by using system commands in PHP, but that would only work on a Unix/Linux server.
Thank you Gordon. Do you mean something like this ?

I tried that one, but whilst I have only looked at using mozilla on my Sun as a browser (not what I really want), it kept locking up. Perhaps it might work with Internot Exploiter, but the software is said to be alpha software, and the version is only 0.3, so perhaps it is not totally surprising it is not that stable.
The program I want to run (mathematica) and the web server (Apache) both run on Solaris, so if a shell connection is emulated in a browser, that would solve it. I'm hoping that a password secured SSL connection would be sufficient to reduce the chances of abuse.
Thinking about it more (and I realised I have moved the goal posts *completely*), can you get a full X display on a browser? The program I want to use is X based, but does have a text based interface too, which is all I was thinking initially of using. But if I could get the GUI it would be a bonus.
The only X terminal emulator for a browser I have seen (and I can't recall the program's name) was not too good running between Suns and Windoze. You logged into the Sun, started a server going on some port, then a browser could connect to that port. I thought of using it rather than the commercial Exceed, but Exceed was much better, so never did. There were serious problems with the colour pallet when I tried it last, which was admittedly about 5 years ago.
Someone has written an interface specifically for mathematica on a PDA

which looks quite impressive.
