Birmingham, by my reckoning, is slightly southern...
I guess that depends how you look at it.
Certain references [1] cite Fenny Drayton as the geographical centre
of
England so you could argue that anything north of that is "Northern
England" by definition.
Fenny Drayton is just a gnats more north than the centre of Birmingham
(about 5 miles?)

And of course, to us northerners, anything south of Northampton is
classed as London :-) [2]

Or you could look at things linguistically, plotting on a map the use
of
the northern flat A, as in "batth" as opposed to the southern "bahth".
(This of course excludes the unwashed region around the capital,
where,
if they ever use the word - or the actual appliance! - it would be
bahf.)
;-)
Except that bath residents would use the west flat A, as in batth as
well, and although I would count bath as a northern city, a lot of
people would disagree
You'd count Bath (on approximately the same latitude as the Balham and
Tooting Bec area of London) as a *northern* city?
On that basis, are there any *southern* cities in England? :-)
Maybe "Smiff" (Portsmiff as opposed to Hammersmiff)
That's so far south, it's offshore (just).
Apologies to 5x5 but hey, I used to live there too.
;-)
As did I up until 7 years ago
OMG - you're following me west.
Stalker alert!
;-)
You're all wrong about what a city is.

(a) It has at least half a million people living within its boundaries (not
just vaguely in the same sort of area).

(b) It has black taxis patrolling the streets. Lots of them.

(c) It has a telephone system with numbers in the format: 01n1 nnn nnnn (OK,
020n nnn nnnn counts as a city too, I suppose).

(d) Its native descended inhabitants speak with a distinctive accent similar
to but distinct from other accents in the same region - and the difference is
discernible by outsiders.

(e) It has long jams on every road leading into the city-centre (see what I
did there?) every morning except Sunday.

Portsmouth fails then, as it has the jams on the sunday too.

And it fails the other four.
