Started to love it.

Our guitarist then brokered a great deal (friends with the store).

And I have staring at me from the corner of the room a RH450 head and the
RS210 2x10" cab. :-)

Still on trial, as I want to see how it behaves at rehearsal volumes, but
I
think it sounds great.

4-band EQ, all four semiparametric with a HUGE overlap of frequencies...
if
you cannot set it to boost/cut the frequencies you want, then noone can!
That was a big selling point for me.

The "Tube Tone" thing sucks mightily, I think. So that knob is staying
firmly set at zero. But the thing sounds really sweet, despite looking
like
an old radio/alarm clock.

I never got to try an equivalent MarkBass rig, couldn't find what I
wanted
around here and it's too much money to buy without trying... so I hope I
don't try them one day and deflate! In any case, this sounds good...

I love the smell of GAS in the morning [1]

Jose

[1] this morning when I went into the music room it had the distinct
smell
of "new gear". It's a nice change from other times, like when I bought a
small practice amp and a bass from someone who had a big hairy dog at
home... and the case and amp smelled of a mixture of dog, dog shampoo,
and
deodorant. It took several days for that smell to go away.

Nice one Jose. If it wasn't for the fact I got my MB amp not even 2
years ago, and still happy with it, I would've been very tempted to
try one of these out. It seems to do everything I would want from an
amp. Power, lightweight, flexible eq, intelligent multi-band
compressor, OD (in the tube tone) and tuner. If you don't need extra
effects such as chorus, filters etc, you just turn up with bass, amp
and cable. Easy

Greg

I would have really liked to test the MB and this one side by side, or at
least within the same day, but it seemed difficult. Times like this I miss
the times I lived in/around London (any other time I'm glad I don't ;-)
Maybe I'd have liked better the MB solution, but I'm happy with this so far.

I tried it last night at rehearsal. With the 2x10" cab alone standing at
about 1m from the floor. This means about 250-280W, rather than the full
450W. It has tons of bass. In fact, I have to tweak that more carefully
because it seems a bit too rich on the lower registers. NOt the most
powerful rig I've tried, but it wasn't quiet! The cab seems very
directional. You feel the bass, but you only get the definition in a
relatively narrow area. I started playing it with the cab at about 45
degrees on teh side behind me... and I wasn't getting it... my guitarist
across said it sounded really good from there. So I moved towards where he
was... much better. As I moved out of the way, teh drummer could hear it
much better too. ah!
The volume knob was turn about 3/4 of its travel, at around 2 o'clock. The
input gain wasn't as high as it could have been, the light indicating
saturation never came in, so I can turn it up a bit still. I noticed (at
home) that you can turn up the input gain to levels where the warning light
comes in frequently, but as long as it's a short peak (occasional loud slap)
you don't hear any distortion. I ended up playing without compression
because I was getting some squealing. I need to play around with this to
figure out the best settings. Yesterday we were rushing a bit and I couldn't
spend too much time just messing with my sound.
The tubetone control... I didn't use it. I engaged it a bit once, and it
sounded better than in my tests at home, adding just a bit of extra growl...
but I doubt I'll be using that much. I recently got a MXR Bass DI+ and I
like the overdrive sounds of that thing better.

The EQ is, for me, where the strength of this head lies. The default centre
frequencies are well chosen when you play it in the shop, at relatively low
volumes. The bass is deep. Even too deep. The low-mid range cuts through and
the trble adds sparkle. But play it louder and I end up cutting bass,
actually, while I had to change low-mid knob to deal with a slightly lower
frequency instead. I tweaked things almsot after every song we played, and
by the end of the session it sounded a lot better... but I'll need to work
at it. Here's where the ability to save presets is a great thing. I saved
the last sound settings in one of the memories... and next day I can
continue exactly where I was... even if I try different things between now
and then.

The cab has a tweakable tweeter, and I turned it up just a bit. I like the
extra brightness, but my bass has pretty old strings by now (not THAT old,
but used a lot and are noticeable duller than they were at first).

I added a 1x15" cab that was in the room, which then allows me the full
450W. The added bass was clear, I had to turn teh bass down a bit when I had
both cabs on like that. Louder? I can't say it was much louder, it just had
more "body", which I guess is where the extra watts went.

Previously I used another 450W head (Peavey Tour) with two cabs, a 4x10" and
a 1x15". The Peavey with that combination sounded good. The RH450 with the
single 2x10" doesnt quite have the same depth, but it's not terribly far
from it. And I can grab the cab with one hand, the bass on my back, and the
head in a shoulder bag (small, and under 5Kg). No contest. I'd rather
sacrifice a bit of depth than my back. I might end up getting another cab(s)
if I find myself requiring a bit more extra... but as long as I can DI into
the PA...

I do want a lifesize cardboard cutout of a 2x 8x10" monster, to unfold and
stick on stage behind me, for the "cool" factor ;-)
