My Vintage (the manufacturer) Strat had a similar problem with both
tone
pots - all the action was in the last 10% of the rotation.
I fitted two new tone pots (CTS 250k linear) the ones it came with were
500K log (and one 22nF capacitor) and they both now work correctly so
my
vote is for linear pots for Strat tone controls.
Yes, log pots for volume to compensate for the ears response but the
tone controls treble cut circuit should use a linear pot.

My Encore (It's a JHS, so similar to vintage) had the same problem.
Opening up whilst replacing the stock pickups with Rockingers I found
the pickups were about an inch deep! (Some people may remember me
showing them at a Wigan do) and the pots were all 500k. I bought
some new pots, switch and a cap from Rockinger.I had to do some rather
crude woodwork to fit them, as they were bigger than the mini pots
fitted as standard.

The only thing that now needs replacing on there is the horrible
die-cast trem. Unfortunately it has non-standard string-spacing of
50mm, instead of the standard 54mm, so it looks as though I'm stuck
with that.

Throw the damn thing away, Steve.
Do not waste any more time on it.
Stamp on it.
Pour petrol on the bits
Burn it!

It works for me, George. It's one of the wooden-bodied ones, not the
resin-and-sawdust jobs.

Yes, I know.
If only they'd put more sawdust in the mix when they made mine it might have
had a better tone.
