I've just wasted an afternoon changing the strings on my Takamine acoustic
guitar .... twice!
I thought I'd try a change from my usual Martin 80:20 bronze (extra-light 10
to 47s) to some 'phosphor bronze'. I think I'd read that these had a warmer
sound.
The guitar shop had some Guvnor phosphor bronze similar gauge (10 to 48) at
the same price so I bought them. When I put them on the guitar the 3rd
string (22) buzzed horribly when fretted!
I even tried adjusting the truss rod in case they needed a bit more curve in
the neck ... but it didn't make any difference and besides I got the
feeling that it wasn't vibrating against the next fret ... the noise was
hard to identify.
Luckily I had a spare set of Martin strings so I just tried the 3rd from
this set, and the problem disappeared immediately.
So I removed all the Guvnor strings and replaced them with Martin and now it
sounds great again!
Anyone had a similar problem? .... is it because the string (.022) was
thinner than my usual .023 ... or is it the type of string .... or the
brand?
If the G string requires a lower tension than the Martin one, this could be just enough to cause buzzing due to the wider arc as it vibrates. All other things being equal (which they probably aren't, but never mind) a thinner string requires less tension for the same pitch, so this seems plausible.
