I've never heard that suggestion before. It sounds suspect - probably

initials POME (Prisoner of Mother England). The trouble is, they didn't.

I don't recall the term "gay" being used as a euphemism for homosexuality
before the sixties.
These were the days when I saw a guy in a cafe beat up an effeminate youth
because of the way his hair was styled. The ladies behind the counter
refused to call the police (presumably they thought he deserved it -
beatings were, after all, commended as therapy in those times).
One of those situations where, looking back, you wish you'd had the
boldness to intervene ...
