I am wondering what's the *clean* headroom of this amplifier. Any users
here?
I'm considering getting one, mostly for bass. The second band I'm in
rehearses sometimes at the guitarist's place. It's not terribly loud. He
has
a tiny weeny bass amp (10W I think) and I struggle to hear myself. It's
too
far for me to bring my little combo and as I usually go there straight
after
work I really don't want to be carrying bass + combo. I don't want to
leave
it there either.
He has a 12" cab I can use 'though... if I bring a head. I have a 300W
head,
but it's a little heavy and bulky. The Crate seems great sizewise (almost
too good)... and power-wise it should be plenty. I really don't need to
be
very loud. My 40W bas combo would be adequate. The question is, does this
Crate have enough headroom while staying *clean*?
If it did it would be fantastic: cheap & tiny. I'm off to check Harmony
Central, but I'd rather hear from somebody here.
Cheers!
Jose
Hi there Jose,
I have one of these Crate Powerblocks which is currently used by my
sons band as their PA! It's not suitable at all for this, but it
was all that was available. I used to have two of them but sold one.
I bought them to use as a pair of slaves when I was gigging with my
Pod XTLive. Using it in this fashion it was pretty loud. I was
driving a PA speaker cab.
I''ve never had the problems the others describe, but I've never
actually used it as a full blown amp. What I'll do is get t'lad to
try it out with his bass gear next time their rehearsing. I'll get
him to use it instead of his Laney R2 combo. He's got a Laney 1x15
cab which it can drive.
On the plus side, they weigh next to nothing and come with a dedicated
gig bag so are dead portable. They were also seriously cheap. There
was a thread about them on this group about a year ago - google for it
for more info.
I'm not looking to sell mine as I'm hanging onto it just as a simple
backup for anytime I need a spare amp. If you'd really like to try
one before buying I can probably drag it back from t'lad and we can
meet sometime (now there's a great idea!!)
cheers

I'd be very interested to hear what your son reports... and hey, your idea
is not bad at all ;-) It's always good to have an excuse to meet, and if he
lets you borrow it back one evening so that i can try it here that would be
fantastic. Although it's not clear when I'll be able to get one.. It seems
that nobody sells them any longer. :-(
