I am wondering what's the *clean* headroom of this amplifier. Any users
here?

I'm considering getting one, mostly for bass. The second band I'm in
rehearses sometimes at the guitarist's place. It's not terribly loud. He
has
a tiny weeny bass amp (10W I think) and I struggle to hear myself. It's
too
far for me to bring my little combo and as I usually go there straight
after
work I really don't want to be carrying bass + combo. I don't want to
leave
it there either.
He has a 12" cab I can use 'though... if I bring a head. I have a 300W
head,
but it's a little heavy and bulky. The Crate seems great sizewise
(almost
too good)... and power-wise it should be plenty. I really don't need to
be
very loud. My 40W bas combo would be adequate. The question is, does
this
Crate have enough headroom while staying *clean*?
If it did it would be fantastic: cheap & tiny. I'm off to check Harmony
Central, but I'd rather hear from somebody here.

Cheers!

Hi Jose,

Wow... I've been able to respond to two amp posts in the same day! A
first for me.

I used the powerblock on my pedalboard, believe it or not (it really
is that small) to power a Heil Talkbox. With a boss overdrive up front
it was perfect. More of interest to you, both of us in my former band
had one for rehearsals and they worked just great for guitar. We also
carried them to gigs as backups. Sadly I had to give mine back when I
quit and am also kicking myself for not picking one up when they were
going cheap.

However, earlier this year I returned to the band for some dep gigs on
*bass*. The Hartke combo that they used to have had died and they
hadn't got around to replacing it with anything ... so I had to use
the powerblock into the Hartke's 4x12 cab. Using a Fender P bass, the
amp seemed to overload at anything above a certain volume. That was
our best guess as to what was happening at any rate. If I really gave
the bass a thump, the amp would just shut itself off and take
something like 10 - 15 seconds to come back on and up to volume. I had
to play the remainder of the gigs in a rather sheepish fashion!

It may have just been a glitch with that particular unit, but I'd
check all the tech specs an whatnot if I were you, to ensure it'll
cope with whatever you're running into it. You might be ok if you're
not rehearsing at gig volumes.

Cheers,

nick.
Mine does this too. It's aknown issue. I think there is a fix on the
interweb .

"the crate fix is to solder a 1meg 1/4 watt resistor across the front two
legs of IC 101."

If I use high output pickups, it cuts out when I give it a good hit on
the strings so I may do this fix when I can be bothered!
I got it here on the group as a spare and it's a great amp (apart from the
issue).
Used as a power amp it's rather useful and extremely portable too. For
guitar it even sounds great!

INteresting abot the known fault. I've read other not so positive comments
online. I wonder if this is related to the reason they stopped being made so
quickly... as otherwise they seem like they should be selling like crazy.
