Why so many relics

I have this strange and unexplainable desire to buy a fender telecaster
standard (I guitar I find rather ugly). So I have been idly looking on
eBay to look for them, and occasionally bidding too little on them.
However, I have noticed an increasing (in that I had only seen it
briefly before) increase in 'relic' guitars, where someone has got
something like a tele or a strat (seems quite common with those - maybe
why i never saw it), that is perfectly fine and functional, and
'damaging' it, to make it look old.
Do people really go for that sort of thing? I mean I always had trouble
keeping them undented, it seems odd to get one that someone has
deliberately damaged (to increase its valid).
