But for one thing, neither of us wanted Vista yet the same laptop with
XP costs more!

And for the other, selling a product like a laptop with only half the
recommended RAM for the OS is effectively unfit for purpose (though
you'd never get it past trading standards). We've tried running Vista on
a laptop with only 512Mb, yes it will run, but too slow to be a pleasant
experience.
