When I bought Holly a laptop I was annoyed to find that it was almost
impossible to find one at the budget end of the market _without_ Vista
(which neither of us wanted). Doubly so as most of those laptops come
with only half Vista's recommended 1Gb RAM.
I think it's less of a problem if you buy a new PC, new Vista certified
programs and hardware together, less so getting existing programs updated
drivers etc. to work well.
XP costs more!
And for the other, selling a product like a laptop with only half the
recommended RAM for the OS is effectively unfit for purpose (though
you'd never get it past trading standards). We've tried running Vista on
a laptop with only 512Mb, yes it will run, but too slow to be a pleasant
experience.
