As an event, LE seems to have got people's opinions pretty much
polarised, whether they buy the whole global warming issue or not, and
might well soon go down in history as a self-indulgent flop.

Well, you are always going to have that opinion thing - a large amount
of americans belive in creation, so they are not going to buy that we
are doing anything to the planet.

I wasn't actually suggesting that the loony creationists, neo-cons or
whoever weren't buying the global warming issue - although none of
them probably do.

I'm talking about those who aren't entirely convinced by the whole
global warming argument - myself included*.

might be a waste of time trying to tell me I'm ignorant, mad or
evil............ and I won't respond anyway ;)

No, I was saying that many people believe a point that there is no
evidence to support, and there is no way of arguing with that.

I believe what I see. Pretty well 100% of scientists who have spent many
years researching this problem at a very detailed level say that the
earth is warming. Just over 90% of them say that a part of that is down
to us.

Personally I don't know, I didn't do earth sciences, but that is why we
have people who are experts in their fields. If so many of them say it
is so, I can accept that. I also don't 'know' that eating fatty foods
cause heart problems, but I believe them when experts tell me that is
the case.

Obvioulsy I dont believe politicians, but they are people with no more
knowledge than me on these subjects.

I'm suggesting that instead of preaching vague ideals, we approach our
problems from a very individual basis and encourage individuals in
whatever way is effective to waste less and recycle wherever possible.

Which I think by and large we are starting to do.

If we wait for some sort of global awakening, we'll be drowning in our
own effluent before anything is achieved.

Awakenings like that happen when people are hit in the face by them, by
which time it is far too long.

All we need is an infrastructure that will ensure as little is wasted
as possible - a far more worthy use of public money than a new Trident
system, anti-terrorist measures, ID cards and supporting an occupying
force in countries that really don't want us there.

Don't get me started on the amount we spend promoting terrorism and the
liberties we lose in the goal of some percieved feeling of safety.

Neither can we afford to wait for less-developed countries to catch up
with us - we just need to do what we can in our own society and not
deny them the opportunities we've had and greatly benefited from - an
increasingly impoverished third world is as dangerous as global waste
and pollution.

No argument there
