I'm actually a bit of an open-source freak, and there are several "live"
(i.e. boot off a CD) Linux distributions aimed at musicians and graphics
guys - they've got soft synths, drum machines, ditigal audio workstations.
I was intending to use one of those.

The one I've played with most, dyne:bolic, works well with my laptop.
Everything hardware-esque is recognised (I've not plugged the keyboard in
yet, though, but it is USB Midi compatible), and dyne:bolic features two
great features that *all* Linux "live" distros should include:

The first feature is called a nest (it's a *single* folder on your
existing hard drive, either windows or Linux, where you store your
settings between boots. It can also be on a memory stick.)

The second feature is called a dock (again, a single folder), which is
basically the CD image on your hard drive, so you don't get the slow CD
access when booting from CD). Also, if you have linux on your hard-drive,
you can boot from grub or whatever into the dock, without touching the
rest of your installation(s), it really is just one folder on the hard
drive.

I use a pair of dead cheap Edirol self powered monitors, they do a pair for
less than £100, and, unless you want to make stuff to sell, they're quite
adequate.

Are those the Edirol MA-07 ones, or maybe the MA-15? What's the bass like
on the ones you've got, especially sub-guitar frequencies like a keyboard?
I'm hearing significant dropoff in volume on low bass notes using my
(ahem) built in keyboard speakers.

Cheers,

Alistair
