As requested Paul
These are all people I've seen play this year, or have been introduced to this
year - with one exception. I shall indulge myself with some notes for each.
Treat Yo Mama - John Butler Trio
Saw Jack Johnson in Paris last Easter, and chatting with someone I met there was
introduced to JBT.
Littletown - Roger Davies
I've seen and played support for Roger five or six times now this year. He's
based in Brighton but tours up Stockport way a fair amount too. Well written
songs, nice bit of guitar playing and very entertaining to watch. He's playing
at the Stage Door sometime next year when he gets his new album and single out,
I'll give you a shout if you're interested.
Latchkey Lenny - Bidgie Reef and The Gas
Saw these guys only last week - this song is blinding live, a great combination
of punk and Pet Shop Boys.
Still Learning - JeanGuy
An indulgence starts here. JeanGuy plays at the Stage Door in Waterloo, and runs
a small studio at his home. Just a beautiful smooth voice and a guitar style that
I have yet to figure out how to do.
Misery Is The New Happiness - Albino
Another Stage Door regular, Ben and Matt write catchy tunes from slightly out of
the left field.
Good Weekend - Art Brut
Got given this by a friend who thought I'd like it - she was right.
Pick Up - Bonobo
Saw these guys at The Big Chill this year, and this sort of cross of dance beats
and acoustic has surprised me with how much I like it.
Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want - Clayhill
Another Big Chill band, this a great cover.
The Only Living Boy In New Cross - Carter USM
Ok, didn't see these guys play this year, and I've known of them for years, but I
got the CD this year, and I've been to New Cross - never again.
Ernie - Fat Freddies Drop
Final Big Chill find, New Zealands finest I reckon. Never been a huge fan of dub
/ reggie, but live these guys just go into huge, rambling jams which are hugely
entertaining to watch unfold.
Taylor - Jack Johnson
Saw him earlier this year and he was as expected. This is one of my faves, which
I'm still struggling to learn to play.
Chameleon - Mick Hart
A mate of a mate, Mick is now staying in London and playing regularly down here
to a regular crowd of Aussies. Acoustic, rootsy, and lots of emotion in his live
set. (and with any luck, I'm gonna be part of the support when he plays the
12Bar next year - another guitar goal for me to tick off).
Can't Stand The Sound Of My Own Voice - The Wood Children
One of the first bands I saw as a kid - their album 'Shopaholic' was a regular on
my stereo. They reformed for a one off gig this summer in town which was too good
an opportunity to miss.
Go *** Yourself - Hammell On Trial
Mark Hamell at his eloquent best. Opening track from his Choochtown album. Never
seen him, had the album years, so it's the odd one out here.
