I think the government should keep it's sticky beak out of who plays what
where. Playing at home is a "noise abatement" issue. Playing on the street
is "busking". Playing in a pub is a "public entertainment" issue. So where
or how can we play exactly without the State's intervention? The beauty of
the "two in a bar" rule is that it at least embodies some notion of common
sense. By and large two performers aren't going to bring up the same issues
as a full band. The White Stripes example is a poor one. It's just common
sense that you shouldn't book major acts into small venues. As for Coldplay,
well you just shouldn't book them because they're ***; ymmv.

I don't see why public health and safety and public performance should
necessarily be bound together. Either a pub is or isn't a death trap
regardless of who is or isn't doing whatever in it. New Year's Eve and
Christmas Eve jam most pubs to the rafters. There's no special licence for
that.

In anycase since when did the government give a rat's arse about our well
being? If they did there'd be less cars on the road, greater controls on
unhealthy working practices, more renewable energy and so on and so forth.

This legislation is about obsessive government intrusion into our private
lives, the erosion of free expression, collecting licensing fees,
facilitating big business revenue (compare the landlord paying Sky for his
sports channel subscription vs. paying a few quid to a couple of musicians)
and an increasingly warped notion of safety where there is a confusion
between "responsibility" and "liability"; ie: protecting your arse rather
than theirs.

As for Feargal Sharkey ... phht!
