Kelso Folk Club CD
We went for 1,000 glass mastered copies with proper jewel cases and
leaflets - the production costs are low enough to allow a 900% profit
should we sell all 1,000....
which was the LOWEST number we could order! If we only wanted 500, they
would have been CD-R written, not pressed, and actually cost more than
1,000 'real' CDs from the same plant.
We don't really expect to sell all 1,000 and make the club unfeasibly
rich, but at the £10 standard price (not bad for a 74-minute, 21-track
album) we have leeway to give our club members a special price, our
artists a very special price so they can buy multiple copies for friends
and family, and local traders a very fair discount incentive to buy for
cash rather than use the tedious S.O.R. method I have tried in the past
with a community project CD.
We paid the £250 fixed licence fee to MCPS which covers whatever anyone
chose to record, cover or original or traditional, but only after first
pressuring members to record anything BUT covers or copyright material.
Production took just 10 working days from receipt of my Toast mastered
copy and PDF artwork files by Impress, the pressing plant. Delivery was
dead on time, with CDs packed perfectly in four 25-CD dispenser type
cartons per box of 100.
The acid test - whether the CD plays in all players - was passed by my
old Technics non-CD-R compatible, but failed by one more recent Sony -
this may be a penalty for getting nearly the maximum play time on the
CD. So far all modern players have handled the CD perfectly, and in my
car, the volume on inserting the CD is a dead match for radio tuner
volume so the gain levels seem to be fine.

Because we have far too many CDs to sell, we are willing to do a trade
with any comparable club (or even with bands or individuals) to swap a
suitable number of CDs like for like. We will from now on have CDs for
sale, and visitors may well be interested in other CDs too. Therefore we
will do a postal swap of our CD in units of five (easily posted) against
any similar project CD.
