I've been asked this question...
A young pair of musicians want to form a band. They come from folkish
families, are pretty good at what they do (both play several
instruments, eclectic musical tastes, both write in my opinion pretty
well in a variety of styles from english moris to wild cajun) and they
want to earn some money. So they asked me, as an old fart on the folk
scene who has done most of it in his time, for advice as to how to start
getting gigs. And I was being baffled to find a sensible answer.
One of the things I do as part of folkWISE is talk to people just starting off as professionals and either give advice or point them towards where they can get it.
Send them to look at the folkWISE site at
www.folkwise.org
There are info files on there (bottom button) including my
'How to get Gigs' and 'Marketing' articles
Just looking at it again there are a couple of things I need to update in the getting gigs section, but it's basically OK.
On my agency site there are also a couple of helpfiles
'Why you don't need an agent' and 'What's a percentage deal'
If you want to give you duo my phone number (on my agency website) they can call me up for advice if they want to.

I don't promise to make them rich because at the end of the day overnight success usually takes years to achieve, but I can bust a few myths and save some wasted journeys down blind alleys.
Happy to help.
