I've heard people complaining about Real Player doing that, but I've never
had any problems with that or with QuickTime. Partly, probably, because, as
recommended by your link, I've always set my file associations manually.

It's not just media players that do this either. I've known graphics
programs to grab all my jpgs and gifs too.
