Why tax big cars? It's missing the point. If you drive 10,000 miles at 25mpg you produce the same carbon output as someone who drives 20,000 miles at 50mpg. If the government wants to penalise carbon emission from transport it should increase the tax on fuel so that those who produce most carbon pay most, that would then catch the high carbon output long distance commuters, those who drive a couple of hundred yards to the local shop and back when the engine's cold, those who drive when the roads are jammed doing stop start and ultralow mpg.

Not done the figures but I suspect most people's carbon output from home heating and lighting is greater than their output from transport, so if the gov wants to reduce carbon emission through taxation why not tax gas and fossil fuel generated electricity?
