I left Manchester in 1973

That's when I arrived there. Was it something I said?

I went back again in 1978, had you left by then?

I stil remember a flying visit back to Manchester about 1976/77 to see a friend who was taking a Physics degree. He was in the student flats on top of the University precinct at the time. He introduced me to the bloke he shared a flat with "This is Adrian, he's funny." He didn't seem that funny at the time. Nor when he later appeared on TV.
