there was an engine in it , sure it would have gone straight down

Someones mentioned John Bishop this week already here , he's everywhere

Who'd have thought 20 yrs ago Clarkson would recommend a Skoda!
I think he actually stopped short of recommending it; at least, he
wasn't going to trade his AMG Merc against it!
The 911 feature was a wasted opportunity - Hammond should have tested
the (rather gay) modern cabriolet against the original 911 - but
perhaps that would have been embarrassing for Porsche?
The modern Beetle is a Golf with a Third Reich body kit
It's not at all, Hitler, being an arrogant sod had Ferdinand Porsche in and said build a car for the people - even though Porsche was already working on it. The Czech car manufactures were already working on cars with rounded aerodynamic bodies that looked beetle like.
They took the money of people in the form of saving stamps but war broke out so they built Kubelwagons instead . After the war the VW beetle design was offered to Morris but he declined saying people would never but it. The UK occupation forces eager to get the population back to work had the locals rebuild the factory and start building the cars for the occupation forces.
A real success story.
