Re: Bread: Loaf It Or Leave It

I have a leisurely second breakfast ritual. I eat four slices of toast
at 11am with a pot of strong Assam tea.

Now, I would like to think I am the last person to come over all nanny
state but I’m here to warn you that butter is nature’s way of telling
you that high fat junk foods, chips and crisps, aren’t so bad after
all.

I have a friend who was similarly addicted to hot buttered toast and
he had his first heart attack and subsequent angioplasty surgery
before the age of fifty.

In all other respects, keen sportsman and non-smoker; he was a very
unlikely heart patient.

Similarly, a relative, who had had a heart attack, forced to examine
his diet for high saturated fats, was amazed to discover that just
cutting out butter left him eighty percent of the way towards
achieving his doctor’s advice.

I am truly amazed, in these health conscience times that butter gets
such an easy ride.

It contains the same levels of saturated fat as pure animal fat, such
as beef dripping, and twice the saturated fat of the next worst
favourite, quality cheese.

In turn, butter contains four times as much saturated fat as the
sunflower or olive oil based spreads.

As further evidence, I offer my margarine-loving smoker grandfather,
who developed a taste for it thanks to butter being way outside their
price range in the bad old days.

When examined, aged eighty-five by a hospital doctor, the doctor
declared, “You have the heart of a man of fifty.”

I also love butter, the salty Lurpak stuff being my favourite, but
nowadays I ration myself to less than once a week using the olive
spreads the rest of the time.

I'm totally convinced that eating butter is as dangerous as it gets
unless combined with copious amounts of red wine, which seems to work
for the French.
