No-one should BUY an OS. Your computer comes with one, which works
fine. A fool and his money.
Bull. Try upgrading your motherboard and booting into the operating system that came with your PC. It's not gonna happen if it shipped with XP or Vista. You'll have to buy a new OS.
I upgraded to a quad core and 4GB RAM earlier this year (net cost: just under £250, compared to over £800 if I bought a computer with the same specs, considering the high spec graphics, sound card, etc. in the existing PC). I was forced into buying Vista because XP Activation detected the mobo change and decided the license was no longer valid. (I expected this though because I did my research.)
Having said that, I have no complaints. I needed a 64-bit operating system so that all 4GB of RAM could be addressed, and 64-bit driver support in Vista x64 is far better than in XP Pro x64 (for which no new drivers are being written).
It doesn't crash, I've yet to see a blue screen, it runs extremely smoothly, and I find features like Flip 3D and tablet support to be extremely valuable.
