Actually come to think of it, it probably just means that his big mate
Ricky Gervais will do it instead as an audition for the Oscars.
On Loose Women, Ricky was asked about Ross and he said, "I really want
to be the only person in this business not to have a view on this."

When asked if had been in contact with Ross he said, "I haven't, I
sort of decided that the last thing Jonathan needed at this moment was
some comedian ringing him up."
" Some comedian"   He's being a bit presumptious calling himself that
is he not?

By "some comedian" he most likely means someone who Ross can't take seriously,
as he (Tomlinson) has no useful professional advice or experience to offer.
Just the usual cliches and maybe expressions of sympathy.

As in you "don't want to be listening to a comedian like me."

I'm sure that line must have featured in "Brookside" at least once.

I admittedly didn't see the whole article, but I thought it was Ricky Gervais
rather then Ricky Tomlinson who was being referenced.

Oops ! I didn't read it either. I don't know what made me think of Tomlinson
except the actual phrase. Which could also be translated as "timewaster"
I suppose. I didn't realise Gervais did downmarket daytime stuff like "Loose Women".
And Reading is sort of near Liverpool. Nearer than London anyway.

For the benefit of the OP Ricky Gervais is of course much more than a "mere comedian".

I happened to catch the first ten minutes of the Ben Stiller "Extras"
last night. Maggie fancied the Bosnian or whatever writer of the gritty
true life epic they were filming. Andy "You don't want to fancy him, his wife
was murdered, you'll always take second place to his murdered wife."
Worth pondering on.

Andy Milman goes into the trailer so as to persuade the Bosnian writer to
give him extra lines. The Bosian guy is slumped over the table crying looking
at a photograph. Embarrassment. "My wife, my wife" -= shows the photo to Milman
Milman" Very nice, sunbathing why has she got no clothes on ?"

Bosnian "She's dead my wife she dead in the photo dead"

Sobs over table

Milman (puzzled ) "But why would you... er right I'll catch you later"

Makes hasty exit.

But obviously as there's no laughter track he can't be called a comedian.

You're right about Liverpool speech - "some comedian" is used as a synonym
for "some fool" or "some idiot".

Extras is great. The one with Les Dennis was brilliantly done.
