If you're just trying anything, perhaps you could try booting from a live Ubuntu CD and seeing if it has any better luck. IE look for files, and it it appears dead, load up gparted (gnome partition editor) and see if it's reporting it as ntfs or empty or not present etc)

Are you the one who always recommends Ubuntu?

Do you work for them or something?
