Hi guys,
got a spanky new DVD player/recorder (Philips) which can play DivX
files directly. Great I throught - far fewer DVDs needed.
However I've run into a snag, which I can't seem to get a straight
answer to ....
Some files play fine - so I'm not worried about those. However, some
AVI files play fine on my PC (Under both Windows and Linux), and yet
when they are copied to DVD the audio is out of sync with the video,
but up to 2-3 seconds in some cases.
I understand there are different formats of AVI file, and the file
contains "metainformation" regarding audio synchronisation ... but
beyond that I'm a little lost. Can anyone advise, or at least point me
in the right direction ?
I had a similar problem. I bought a couple of cheapish DVD/DivX
players so that we could watch downloaded TV programmes more easily.
Both had the same problems that you've experienced - the audio would
end up several seconds out of synch with the picture, even though the
DivX files would play fine on the PC. A bit of Googling led me to the
conclusion that the cause could be that the audio on these files was
enocoded as variable bitrate (VBR) rather than constant bitrate (CBR),
and that the firmware in the set top players wasn't capable of
decoding this properly. I considered trying a more expensive player,
but would have been mightily pissed off if I'd ended up with the same
problem. In the end I got an old laptop which we now use exclusively
for the purpose of watching DivX encoded TV programmes. Hook it up to
the TV and it works pefectly with no audio synch problems at all.
Thank you, this actually makes sense ! It also explains why some AVIs
play perfectly, and some not.
The implication is that if I re-code the files before writing to DVD,
It'll be fixed ... I'll see what tools there are out there ...
avidemux has been mentioned a lot ....
