Last Weds, I thought an upgrade to Quicktime7 would solve a problem
with conversion of mp4 files for putting on my Creative Zen MP3
player, but it didn't so that was that.

Then the next day, this pops up having been caught by my firewall:
http://dvdfever.co.uk/apple.jpg

So, as I didn't want it, I clicked the latter of the two 'Block this
network communication' since I didn't want it updating any software,
and..... it made the PC reboot.

(No viruses were found with Norton Antivirus, and no spyware with
Superantispyware, btw)

When it rebooted, I uninstalled Quicktime altogether. And I haven't
got any other Apple software on there either.

Then today, up comes the same thing (which I took a screengrab of,
hence why it's got today's date), but for no reason as I haven't got
Quicktime any more and it didn't do it before v.7 was installed.
Thinking it might be a one-off, and still not wanting any updates, I
clicked on the same thing and... reboot.

I've done a proper reboot now, given that PCs don't generally like
surprise ones (as they always moan about it when the desktop comes
back up) and checked that Q7 is uninstalled, so WTF is causing this?

Ta, Dom

The Software Update program is intended to update all Apple software, not
only Quicktime so it needs to be removed separately. When you
uninstalled Quicktime, did you also uninstall the program "Apple Software
Update" or did you assume (quite rightly) that as you only had 1 Apple
program installed it would be removed at the same time?

Almost the latter, but I never even knew that I'd installed this Apple
Software Update program.

However, a google a short while ago showed that I can disable it from tasks so
I did that and then, after reading your post, uninstalled it altogether.

BTW. All you had to do in the first place was to run the Apple Software
Update program and set it not to automatically check for updates (in the
Preferences menu)

Thought I'd got rid of all Apple traces last week when uninstalling Q7.

However, a regular irritation is that Googleupdate.exe keeps showing up in the
same way (since I installed Youtubeuploader for multi-uploads which is very
handy) but I don't want to update anything from that as occasionally I let it
and now that means the damn thing no longer works in IE but does work in
Seamonkey (similar to Netscape) when originally it was the other way round.

Often, the firewall will come up for this in 2 3-at-a-time bursts of wanting
to connect, so I just deny them all. However, tonight, for the first time,
round about half past ten... no, it didn't start raining men, I clicked to
deny it and the fucker rebooted. So, now I've killed that process (but the
Youtubeuploader's still there so hopefully that'll still work).

That said, this PC's now almost 5 years old and due to being more cautious
than with the last one (which lasted 3 years), even though I was prone to the
occasional bout of stupidity, it has been better than the last one :)
