The stuff they come out with, coupled with the crazy symptoms and the
rather ridiculous diagnosis and treatments seem to me, a layman in
this area, to be utter garbage. Surely people in the medical field
laugh heartily through it?

I still enjoy it, I just find my ears have somewhat turned off to the
medical explanations because they seem to be so farcical.

It varies, but mostly it's feasible; far fetched in many occasions, but
not nonsense.

See <http://www.politedissent.com/house_pd.html> for a doctor's
perspective on 'HouseMD' episodes.

Didn't creator said at the start most, if not all of the cases, were based
on real cases to some extent?

Graham

"Most, if not all". "To some extent".

Hide a multitude of sins, that lot.

So this guy is the world's greatest diagnostician, because he goes
through every available diagnosis until he hits the right one?

This just shows how unrealistic it is. In just about every episode he
almost ends up killing the patient through
mis-diagnosis only to finally stumble across the actual disease
because he sends his minions off to break into the patientshouseand
find rat droppings in their bread bin or whatever.
I've watched the first two series and have the 3rd one ready to watch
but to be honest I've grown a bit bored with it now. Maybe I'll go
back to it after a while.
It's the same with Boston Legal, which I'm currently watching a lot
of. It's a great series with some fantastic characters but, so far
(mid S2), they have won 99% of all their cases which means the
suspense is killed quite a bit. It's still interesting to see how they
get there though so I'm sticking with it for now.

House is great because of the character development and progression.
The medical drama is only a hanger to hang the coat on, so to speak.
I would find the show interesting even if the characters were Lawyers
because of the characters. At any rate, there is a show on here in
the US called mystery diagnoses (I think), that details real cases
where doctors were mystified and stumbled upon some bizarre cause.
People being treated for seizures and given medications all their life
only to find out something simple missed was the cause all along and
the like. I suspect the ideas for the episodes come from things like
that....thought it obviously is mashed into a short time frame and
made overly dramatic.
