Re: OT - Windows Explorer freezing

When you say a totally clean install, do you mean going through that process
with the CD, as opposed to just formatting everything from scratch, so that
everything's back to its factory settings? (this is if I can find the CD)

Well when I do a clean install, I start from scratch. Boot from the
XP CD, format the hard disk, and then reinstall the OS. The result is
a completely clean PC as if it had just arrived from the factory.
Depending on whether or not you have an XP installation disk that may
or may not be possible. I know that some PCs are supplied with XP
pre-installed, but with a "recovery disk" rather than an installation
disk. I've always assumed that this recovery disk can get you back to
the default factory install, but as I've never had such a setup myself
I couldn't swear to it.

Yep, I had to do it once with the 2nd PC that I bought in November 2005. Two
months later it did something such where it would flash up some German text on
booting (because Medion are a German company) and then shut down. I had to
boot it three times to read the text as it went too quickly.

There were options to reinstall the drivers alone (which I went for, but
there's not a lot of stuff on there that's vital), reinstall drivers and wipe
the C drive, and another which wasn't as deep as the first two but it was the
drivers that I needed.
