On 2 Mar, 00:20, Dom Rob FWIW, I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 1

So, as things stand, I'm back 'now' in terms of the system restore point and
the icon of one program is on the desktop (the one I couldn't uninstall) and
I'm Windows Explorer-less and I use it a lot.

If this program screws up Windows Explorer, it's clearly come with a
serious bug or even some virus within it which has messed up some of
your system files. No downloaded program should interfere with Any
Windows files. I'm not clear whether Explorer worked ok once you
tried system restore.

Anyway The first thing I'd try under these circumstabces is to use
the 'sfc' command. This should repair any Windows messed up system
files. You should first have a read up on this.

Thanks for that. I just saw on the page below, though, that the likelihood is
that it'll ask for the Windows XP CD-ROM and the location of that is a distant
memory :(

Like I said, use Windiz Update if you want to update your XP and
download a copy of XP and burn it so you have a boot disc.

I'm starting to think Michael Adams may have a point for once - you
just won't take advice from anybody (and you won't give anybody a clue
about the software that you originally said caused the problem). So
why even ask for help?

I suspect he has an unlicensed copy of WinXP and couldn't update it if he wanted
to.

Another assumption. Wrong.
