Having now seen the start of the UK broadcast I now realise why I
didn't hear the name Same Difference. In the HBO broadcast, the shop
manager said he'd ordered 10,000 San Jiya dolls, or whatever that
should read since it's nothing I've heard of here.
Also, there was no Jade doll, they had a Kramer doll which said, "I'm
out there, Jerry, and I'm LOVING it!" and "Shut up! Fifty years ago
they'd have had you upside down with a fucking fork up your ass!"
There were quite a few other changes made for the US version: the
audience member wearing a T shirt showing Victoria Wood advertising
ASDA was replaced by Sigourney Weaver/direct tv (in reference to
another undigified celeb/ad campaign combination, presumably)
"Young russell crowe / russell grant more like" became richard burton
/ richard simmons
"british film starring neil morrissey as a randy delivery man who
looks exactly like the prime minister" became rob schneider (and they
also substituted "randy" for horny!)
As a suggestion for something undignified Andy would have to do
Emmerdale became Fit Club.
In the Celeb BB segment, they overdubbed Katie Curick instead of Kate
Adie and the bit about Ruby Wax presenting the BB celeb's birth and
making Jimmy Carr's list of 100 greatest Caesarians became Ryan
Seacrest / echannel's
The reference to the Victorian freakshow now being "Big Brother - Or
American Idol" became "X Factor"
Thanks for the info. Although I've never heard of Katie Curick
(although I could look her up), in a lot of cases I just assumed they
were in there anyway to be seen by anyone. I've heard of DirecTV even
though it's not here in the UK, but often when I watch eps of US
sitcoms I'll hear names/companies that aren't familiar over here and
in most cases I get the idea about what they're trying to convey so
that's about as much as I need to know.
They didn't bother to find any equivalent for the end of the Carphone
Warehouse scene about the gossip spreading around Albert Square with
the names of Eastenders characters and just cut the whole thing.
Ditto the George Michael leaked memo including references to Richard
and Judy and the Catherine Tate Christmas special
Whereabouts do these come in since I didn't know they were in it, so
didn't think to flick through the UK version.
Surprising some of the things they left in which could hardly make any
more sense to a US viewer, like mentions of "Jade Goody's mum" or the
casual reference to "Dawn" even with a helpful nudge mention of Vicar
of Dibley...?
I think programmes makers underestimate the viewers of other
countries. For example, I've only seen a few minutes of American Idol
so I know who Ryan Seacrest is even though I wouldn't care to watch
anything with him in it, and any reality show fan will have heard of
him, whereas those who aren't will get the idea from Extras that he
does a load of cheap tat and will move on to the next line.
Seems a shame they had to 'Britishize' it :)
PS there *are* both Kramer and Jade dolls in shot in both versions,
but the manager only picks up the appropriate one in each version.
