Pardon?

Maybe it was Clarkson's indefinite article.

Heh heh :)

I thought the OP was referring to his Sun article yesterday which was
all about Afghanistan and rather went on a bit.

Overall, I can't understand why our government seems to keep to fight
various wars while doing it on the cheap with shoddy equipment (or
none at all)

When I think of British forces, I always seem to picture the closing
titles of "Dad's Army" for some reason. :)

and why anyone wants to go into the army knowing all this
as well as the shitty conditions they'll have to live in and that if
they die out there then the government won't give a ***.

I can understand wanting to defend your country from attack or
invasion by another, but I'm as puzzled as you as to why anyone would
want to risk their life in Iraq or Afghanistan. What do I care if the
people of Afghanistan allow the Taliban to rule them, or the people of
Iraq put up with Saddam Hussein? That's up to them to sort out. It's
got sod all to do with me.

Is everyone who partakes in a war just a complete masochist, or is it
that they just can't think of anything else to do?

There are lots of reasons why people joined the armed forces:

Because of family tradition.
Because it offers a secure job (or at least a job that's more secure
than the equivalent in civvy street).
Because the army will tell them where to go, what to do and when they
should eat, sleep and *** and this saves them the trouble of having
to think for themselves.
Because they think the armed forces does a good and worthwhile job in
maintaining peace and overthrowing bad regimes throughout the world.
Because they like the idea of being able to kill people without being
accountable for it.
etc.

The people in the armed forces don't get to choose which wars they
partake in, of course. That's the politicians who, for the most part,
have never put anything on the line for their country, let alone their
necks.
