Ignore current broadband connection speeds and bandwidth caps,
because in a decade's time they'll look as prehistoric as dial-up
does to someone with fast broadband today. Remember that the speed
of the Internet itself is governed by the speed of routers, and
routers have followed Moore's Law religiously since about 1984. And
bandwidth caps will also go up dramatically compared to what they
are today.

And who's going to pay to replace/supplement all the phone wiring
underground to boost the speeds to those that they enjoy in some
countries where it goes up to 100Mbps? You've got to do that before
you can remove bandwidth caps.

And another thing, you were saying that the HD disc formats would be
bypassed by people downloading HD films instead.

I didn't say that's how they'd be bypassed, but it's one option.

Yes you did say that:

http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.media.tv.misc/msg/1078a9d648ca01c6

"if it happens at all as cheap hard drives and downloaded films (paid-for or
otherwise) running from those hard drives to the TV will negate the need for
a disc-based format. Either way,
HDDVD and Bluray are doomed."

But now you're sceptical
about bandwidth caps and broadband download speeds.

I've always been sceptical about that.

So how are people going to download HD films??

Consider this: HD-DVD and Blu Ray discs can hold 25 GB and 50 GB
respectively (IIRC). But let's say an HD film + extras consumes 20
GB. Firstly, 20 GB is way over the vast majority of people's
bandwidth caps at the moment, and if you downloaded at an average
speed of 2 Mbps it would take 22 hours to download the 20 GB of data.

You're going to have to make your mind up.

Done that already.

You've contradicted yourself. Please make your mind up.

Either we're not going to get superfast broadband

That's most likely when neither the government or its challengers
have a care for broadband services and pretend to keep us locked in a
climate of fear over terrorism and 'global warming'.

Hahahahahahahahahaha. So we're not going to get superfast broadband because
of terrorism and global warming?

and your plan that people will download HD films rather
than buying them in disc format would be practically infeasible, or
we'll get superfast broadband and HD downloading would be possible,
albeit that the Internet bandwidth costs for any HD download service
would be so astronomically expensive that it's not going to happen
for a long, long time yet until the Internet backbone can catch up
with the bandwidth required for it.

All of this, yet again, ignores what I originally said some time ago
on this topic, which basically amounts to: Joe Punter doesn't WANT
any HD TV or DVD formats, and it's Joe Punter you need to get on-side
to make this viable.

This is what you originally said:

a disc-based format. Either way,

The adoption of DAB was the most incompetent technical
decision ever made in the history of UK broadcasting:
