Well quite.
Sadly this episode only reinforces the impression that Islam is
intolerant, inflexible and ultimately stuck in the dark ages.
However, I have to say "What was she *thinking* ?!?!?!?!"
Given the hassle caused by a couple of cartoons, what did she
expect would happen if she gave the Prophet's name to a teddy
bear?
Not thinking anything at all I would imagine.
The cartoons were provocative, this wasn't.
She was living and working in a hardline Muslim nation.
No doubt she was far more clued up on the 'do's and
don't' of living in an oppresive regime than most of us.
But still, something that never ocurred to her tripped
her up. The bear was named after the boy in her class,
not the prophet of course. How on earth are Westerners
supposed to appreciate the ridiculous technicalities
Islam can plumb to when fanatics are in charge?
But as you said, it's a country governed by hardliners and fanatics.
She *should* have been very wary indeed of mentioning *anything* to
do with the M-word!
David's office now has a teddy bear called Jesus!
Jesus wants David for a moonbeam.
Well he can't have him.. so there :p
