A relative of mine regularly throws away 80% or more of what she buys.
She buys a hell of a lot, enough to feed the five thousand and no I
don't just mean a few loaves and fishes. Having witnessed the bin men
attempting to move her wheely bin from one weeks worth of food 'waste'
and having difficulty keeping it on an even kilter I suspect that this
fact alone would sway any statistics to the point of them being
utterly useless.
