It's been like this for a few days now - instead of when a post is
answered and it travelling to the top of the list with the name of
the
most recent poster it now acts like OE - the post stays where it is
when it was posted with the name of the OP and new posts are added to
it with "6 new posts.... next to it .
Annoying and easy to miss posts - I still don't fancy paying a dogThen try http://www.motzarella.org
mess covered penny for a newsfeed though.
Very stable and reliable. Good retention. Totally free.Is it fast? I remember when NIN was free...then it got slow...and
not so free. ;)
Well this post is from motzarella ( cheers enzio) , however I'm
posting using OE - so it's a retrograde step . I need a free
newsreader now. Any ideas?
Mozilla Thunderbird?
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/thunderbird/
Well this is using Motzarella as the server and Thunderbird mozilla as
the newsreader . I have to say it looks like OE , and took a little
setting up .
Yeah, you get used to it. All my favourite GUI newsreaders look like OE
(even Linux ones like Pan and Knode), but I don't think it's easy to
make one that looks radically different. Most Windows apps look similar
anyway.
But um, yeah...TB puts the cursor below the post, and has plenty of
display options.
I hope it gets round the problems that I've had with google.
Well you're on Usenet proper again now. Nothing is worse than Google. ;)

Agreed. I just can't read news on nothing.
Earlier comments concerning libraries: I
will assume you mean a public library not
one that's part of a uni'?
These are run by councils. Councils are a
current hotbed of dispute and NALGO and
UNISON recommendations because of both the
use of firewalls and also of snooping on
staff--as well as the amount of staff on
the 'net in work time.
I've seen implausible web pages via council
machines. given that most councils also
provide the IT for schools by way of being
an LEA and also that they provide some of
the facilities for local politicians (and
particularly the computer-illiterate ones)
it was no surprise it got hacked.
I was first clued-in to the "PING" command
of calling up a URL by its numeric value
when talking to a schools IT troubleshooter
about the patchy service at libraries...
"PING", at that time anyway, was kind of
the command that all the kids knew about
but very of the teachers did--hence I have
no problem at all in believing that kids
do spend hours of lesson time downloading
illegal porn and the teachers don't know
how to stop them, never mind how they're
getting it through the firewalls.
So what you are saying is that school firewalls can be breached by
school kids ?
Lots of scope for both low-down dirty tricks,
in other words, not to mention Trojans and
malwares as far as any council-provided IT
is concerned.
I hadn't noticed any UI issues, except that
it's been that bit more clunky recently and
if you take too long composing a post then it
often seems simply to get "stuck" on the way
and doesn't show up.
I have been informed, though, that cyber-
anarchists have been targetting Google as
a censorious stemmer of free speech.
Surely Google could beat off such amatuers easily - I will say that as
of this morning the posts on google are being "thrown" to the top of
the page.
I'm still using google here at work though I do like the Thunderbird +
Motzarella at home.
Sounds like an Italian wino!!
