Whittle's patent for the jet engine, almost beyond doubt, if it hadn't been
for the arrogant and totally uninterested people in the British Air
ministry, we may well have had jet aircraft flying long before world war
two.

I wouldn't say _long_ before WW2 . The air ministry weren't interested
in rushing it to production as the factories were tooled up to make
tried and tested engines and airframes . We forget how man hours heavy
even making a Hurricane was let alone the more complex all metal
spitfire. I remember seeing a jig that was for making shaped copper
piping for a hurricane , it was about the size of a dinner table and
the pipe was hand shaped through pins etc to make the shape. The early
jets were fantastically complex , too much so for early production
techniques.

With hindsight had they put lots of resources in we may have had
something usable by early 44 but we could also have had 100's if not
1000's of other proven aircraft .

The cabling looms for the Spitfire were bad enough. Great fun to watch
on film for the geek, though!

The Comet was a perfect lesson in treading carefully into the unknown
and finding new ways to test aircraft.

Quite - had they rushed it I suppose they'd have come across all sorts
of handling and weapons problems, all this when the country was at the
brink of war. Imagine hopw much the time and money the Germans wasted
developing all their hi tech stuff and it didn't have that much
effect . Had they spent that time and money on conventional stuff it
could have been different.
