Last evening I downloaded a torrent file for a TV program that I had missed.

Upon looking at the file, it contained 23 files followed by and an extension
of .r01 etc

How am I supposed to join all these files together please ?

Your help as always, most appreciated.

In that folder, double-click on the file that ends .r01 (it's a .rar
file), and that should run the programme to extract the file, starting
with an option along the top of what opens up, "Extract To". Click on
that and it'll default to extracting it to a new folder within the one
you're currently in. The end result, after a minute or two as it
counts to 100%, is the file you want.

God knows why people do this because the .rar files are barely any
smaller, if at all, than the .avi (or whatever) file you want.

Nearly right!!

Firstly - ensure you have Winrar, PowerArchive or similar installed.

Then, right click on the file ending .rar (you will have xxx.rar, xxx.r00, xxx.r01 - xxx.r21) and choose extract here (it may be in a Winrar submenu depending on your installation options).

The reason they are split into .rar files is that they are often sourced from Usenet or IRC where they have .par files to enable error correction after download and also (I think) splitting the file is more efficient for downloading from multiple sources on BT. The compression isn't a factor and is sometimes actually less efficient than the existing video compression.

Another option is to install VLC mediaplayer which can play the files without decompressing/joining them (as can XBMC).
