I couldn't believe my ears when I overheard this at Dixons/Currys
Digital this lunchtime..shop was very quiet, lots of staff and few
customers.

Middleaged , well dressed guy asks a member of staff " Excuse me, I
was wondering if you could help me choose a digital Camera for my
daughter..it's a gift for her 21st birthday"...

Currys staff " Certainly, sir...how much were you thinking of
spending ?"

Customer " I don't mind spending a fair bit. I'd just like to get
her somehting really special for her birthday. I don't want to spend
more than £600 if I can help it."

Currys Staff " Well, sir the best thing you should do is go next
door to WH Smiths, have a quick read of the camera magazines, they
dont mind people reading them, then come back and find me when you
have one in mind."...this was said with the member of staff turning
his back on the customer as he was saying this sentance

Customer is absloutley speechless and looks at me in utter
disbelief.....

(Sorry about the messed up attributions, but I missed the beginning of
this thread.)

Apart from the turning of the back, this salesman was actually giving
good advice and providing a good service. Currys sell a wide range of
electrical goods, and I'd never go in there expecting to get solid (or
even impartial) advice over something like a digital camera. It would
have been much worse had the salesman had simply picked the first £600
camera to hand out of the display cabinet and then bullshitted the
customer that this was the top of the range, best one to buy, etc. If
you're looking to pay a fairly decent amount for a camera, the
absolute best thing to do is to do your own research first. Of
course, you then proceed to find the best online deal you can and
don't touch the likes of Currys with a barge pole, but that's another
issue entirely. :)

Jessops who are pretty competitive, will honour any of their online
offers in their shops as well. They often do good bundle deals - camera
memory card and case for less than the bare price elsewhere. Which saves
on worries about stuff getting mislaid, or P&P charges.
